Acne is one of the most common problems in adolescents. Acne can be in the form of blackheads or pimples mainly on the face, neck, back and arms. Acne not only scars the skin but can also scar a patient’s self-image and confidence. However, under the supervision of the qualified dermatologist, even refractory cases, with severe hormonal imbalances can be completely cured. The majority of 11 to 30-year-old will experience acne at some point in their lives. It influences both men and women, but younger men are more likely to get acne due to the presence of higher amounts of male hormone which can intensify the condition.

There are small sebaceous glands just under the skin surface, alongside a hair follicle. These glands produce sebum that keeps the skin supple and smooth. During the teenage years due to the hormonal changes of puberty there is stimulation of these sebaceous glands. It is due to this increase in sebum production as well as the clogging of the pores that acne occurs.

Aggravating Factors

There can be innumerable factors which exacerbate acne, some of them are as follows:

  • Emotional problems or stress.
  • Using wrong cosmetics.
  • Use of occlusive oils or gels for hair and face.
  • Consumption of food high in glycemic index.
  • Drugs such as steroids, androgens etc.
  • Body building proteins.

Acne treatment is varied and highly specific, according to the reasons for its occurence and on the basis of the severity and grade of acne. The aim of management of acne is to decrease the number of new lesions as well as to treat the pre-existent ones. Various treatment modalities available are:

  • Topical modalities like benzoyl peroxide, retinoids etc.
  • Oral medications like antibiotics, another medication etc.

Apart from this, maintaining a good skin care routine, a well balanced diet, exercise and adequate rest helps improve your skin.
